Form follows function is a principle of architecture that states that the shape of structures is dictated by their function. At the Iowa State University College of Design, we adhered to this principle when designing and it is something that has stuck with me in my approach with my clients. Of course each project starts with a detailed site map to lay the groundwork for how the design will physically fit into space. From there, I use 3D modeling to gain a better understanding of the patios, landscapes, fire features, and other outdoor living spaces that will go into the plan.

One of the biggest components of planning a hardscape is putting together an estimate of materials needed, knowing what to order, and the costs involved with building. I've installed numerous hardscapes working within budgets, both large & small, using materials like Unilock (and similar concrete paver brands), natural stones and clay pavers. The projects below highlight some of my favorite hardscape projects over the past few years.
